This Friday I am doing something that I dread. I don't like to, I don't want to, but I will. What am I doing you may wonder? I am going to a Newcomers Dinner.
I am friendly enough, and I know how to make my way when there are random table assignments, but still it is tough to go to anything on my own. Yes, I like to have a friend, my security blanket, with me. But on this particular occasion that is not an option.
At Christmas I had a similar adventure when I went to the Christmas party with other local emergency services volunteers. I had a lovely time actually, and I am sure I will this Friday as well.
That doesn't mean I want to go.
So, why am I going if I don't want to go? Because to build community within any group takes time and effort. The emphasis is on effort. Building community takes work.
I have heard from teachers who do not prioritize building community in the classroom. Some believe a close-knit classroom community just makes students chatty, and their students already talk too much.
My first thought would be to say that the problem isn't classroom community, the problem is not being able to get their students focus quickly and easily - which is a different blog. π
My second thought would be to attempt to share some thoughts on the many benefits of building classroom community. Following are the blog post and video on exactly that.
I am sorry these are so blurry. Can't seem to fix it. Check out my store to see them better!
TL;DR
This week's blog post and video are about the importance of building classroom community.

I'm keeping it short this week! Thank you so much for sharing this time with me! Hit reply with questions or requests.
Cheers for now!

P.S. This week's photo is of Canoe Beach on beautiful Lake Okanagan in BC's Interior. I love to visit this beach in any season. Less than 5 minutes from home by car, it is a great place to draw a breath and take a few moments to focus on the beauty in life.
