Hey there Reader!
I had a student who was so disinterested in school that he intentionally scored low on assessment just due to lack of engagement. Over the course of that school year he learned to enjoy school, and my classroom library was an important part of that journey.
We used the Words Their Way Spelling Program which really made differentiating spelling easy. But imagine my surprise when one of my top readers ended up in the same group as a student who came into grade 1 with Pre-K skills and for whom English is a Second Language.
Something was not adding up (an understatement to say the least).
My winning card was my classroom library. Not only did he have lots to choose from for silent reading, but he was a social guy. As he met more and more peers as they pored over books together he realized that school had its upside. And slowly the same curiosity and engagement that made him an avid reader made him and engaged student.
My classroom library for the win!
