You know, I love teaching. And just plain hanging out with kids. But the challenge and responsibility of teaching students who are so far apart in their current abilities can certainly be overwhelming.
I messaged with one teacher this week who had absolutely no classroom support, and a classroom composition that would be laughable because of the ridiculousness of it if it weren't so tragic.
I set high expectations for my students. All of my students. And yet I also know that a fantastic way to create unmanageable behaviour is to have expectations that are unrealistic. Therefore I also have to believe in differentiation, and I do.
Some subjects are easier than others to differentiate for. I find math the most challenging to differentiate. I love to teach math, but I found it was the hardest for me to learn how to differentiate. And I found writing to be one of the easiest areas to differentiate.
There are, of course, a variety of essentials necessary for effective differentiation in writing, but the easiest is to differentiate the writing paper.
This week I am sharing with you a blog post and video that speaks to differentiation in writing class.

P.S. I live in a small town that I could walk across in a few hours. I just love the rural areas that are close by, and I love the outdoors in the snow.
