New Adventures Up Ahead!

Hey there Reader!

February is the month of love ❀️. My daughter was actually born on Valentine's Day, so we don't celebrate Valentine's Day. We are too busy having a birthday party! πŸŽ‰ But . . . I loved all of the special Valentine's Activities.

However, before I dig into more about that, I have an announcement to make! Drum roll please! πŸ₯

Coming Soon

Have you ever looked in the mirror in the morning, and felt too overwhelmed to teach? I understand. I remember those days all too well. It took some time, but, with time and ongoing learning, I was able to create the classroom I dreamed of, and going in to school was a joy every day.

A course on Classroom Management is in the works to share everything I learned both in my work as a Special Education Coordinator and as a primary classroom teacher.

However, first, there will be a shorter course, or two, on ADHD in the classroom. When I look at my blog posts and videos it is clear that this is a huge need for teachers. I am working out the glitches right now, but keep your eyes open.

More to come on that later. And now, back to my regularly scheduled broadcast! 😊

On February 1st my classroom exploded with the Valentine theme: books, math activities, spelling activities, art. Everything was Valentine's theme, and when it coincided with 100 Days I had activities that combined the two themes. It was fantastic!

However, there is a difference between fun and engagement. Fun is an important part of life, and it is often light and frivolous. Engagement is deeper and more challenging, and it brings with it a different type of reward.

Sometimes, as teachers, we pull out all of the cute, themed activities and wonder why our students are not engaged with all of the laminated centers we have worked so hard on. We need to dig deeper into the topic of how to inspire engagement in our students.

This week's blog post and video are about getting and maintaining student engagement. I start by discussing how sometimes we, as teachers, lose our focus on the essentials. Then I share some evidence-based strategies that will help you to get started.

Engaging Curiosity

P.S. Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are winter passions. I am fortunate to live near Sovereign Lake Ski Area in British Columbia. The views are second to none, but sometimes they are so big it is hard to get them into a picture. At least with my amateur skills. However, today's photo is all about the huge, snow-draped trees that I love so much.
