Hey there Reader!
As the end of the school year approached I was always very focused on what I wanted to accomplish during the summer (not too much, but something), and my goals for the following year.
Each year I taught I looked for ways to tweak my curriculum and classroom management based upon what I had been successful, and what had not been. Initially I was very keen on rewards, and then I realized that, evidence-based or not, I had better ways to spend my time. Rewards were not a strategy that was authentic to me.
Always I brought it back to my classroom management plan. I always wanted to stay laser focused on the work that I really prioritized as a teacher:
- being prepared to teach students at different academic levels
- planning opportunities to build classroom community to support social development for all students
- reorganizing materials or structures (desks, tables etc.) to best facilitate learning
- appropriate strategies for reinforcing classroom expectations
Staying focused on my classroom management plan was essential to evaluating the changes I wanted to make, and what to prioritize for the upcoming year. There was no point on taking on too much at one time.
If you have not already created a classroom management plan then check out this week's blog post and video.
